What is DNS Propagation Checker?

DNS Propagation Checker shows whether your DNS changes have gone live across the world. After updating an A record, CNAME, or nameserver, it can take minutes to 48 hours for every DNS server to pick up the new value. This tool queries multiple global DNS servers simultaneously so you can see exactly where changes have propagated.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the domain name you want to check.
  2. The tool queries 8+ DNS servers worldwide including Google, Cloudflare, OpenDNS, and Quad9.
  3. Review results to see which servers return the new value and which still show the old one.
  4. A green checkmark means the server has the updated record; timeout means it hasn't propagated yet.
  5. Re-check periodically until all locations show the updated record.

Frequently asked questions

How long does DNS propagation take?
Typically 15 minutes to 48 hours, depending on the TTL value set on the old record. Lowering your TTL to 300 seconds a day before making changes speeds up propagation significantly.
Can I speed up DNS propagation?
You can't force every DNS server to refresh, but lowering your TTL 24 hours before the change helps. You can also flush specific resolver caches like Google DNS (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1).
Why do some locations show the old record?
Each DNS resolver caches records for the TTL duration. Servers that recently cached your old record keep serving it until the cache expires. Some ISPs also override TTL with longer caching periods.
Does DNS propagation affect email?
Yes. If you changed MX or SPF records, email servers with old DNS data will route mail to the wrong destination or fail authentication. Keep your old mail server running until propagation completes.
